The Bellarine Peninsula 5/1

We took a trip to the Bellarine Peninsula, part of Port Phillip Bay. This is Point Lonsdale where the bay meets the Bass Strait. Ships pass through The Rip in order to reach Melbourne. There are lots of shipwrecks in the region as it is one of the ten most treacherous navigable passages in the world.

The fort of Queenscliff guards the entrance to Port Phillip Bay. The fort contains one of only three black lighthouses in the world and the only one in the southern hemisphere (made of basalt rock).

During the goldrush era (mid 1850's) Queenscliff became a popular tourist resort for the wealthy. This prompted the building of grand hotels in a European style. This is one still being used today as a B&B.

We returned to Geelong that evening to watch the Jayco Bay Classic Cycling criterium around the waterfront. Featuring many leading Australian cyclists the event was won by 3 times Tour de France green jersey winner Robbie McEwen.

We were tempted to bring our caravan along and set up camp next to the Jayco promotional vehicle as there was more room than at our caravan site because its the school holidays here. They looked like they were on a family holiday themselves rather than selling caravans. I wonder how you get a job like that ?
