The Great Ocean Road Pt 2 9/1

We undertook the second part of our drive along the Great Ocean Road from Lavers Hill to Warrnambool. This particular part of the coast is also known as The Shipwreck Coast as in just 120km stretch of trecherous water more than 80 ships had met with danger during a 40 year period.

We took in a number of the sites the first being the Twelve Apostles, only there aren't twelve of them left any more there are only about eight. Since we came here during our honeymoon in 2002 one of the apostles has crumbled into the sea, this can be seen at the forefront of the picture below.

We then stopped at Loch Ard Gorge, where a ship travelling from England was shipwrecked in 1878 with just two 18/19 year old survivors and a speculated love story to go with it.

This is one of the caves that the pair slept in overnight before Tom the ship's apprentice officer climbed the cliff face the next day to raise the alarm of their survival.

Below is the rock formation known as The Razorback.

And here is David enjoying the views around this area.

'London Bridge has fallen down'. This rock was once known as London Bridge because it had a double arch formation and it was possible to walk right across it to the far end. However in 1990 part of the rock collapsed and left two tourists stranded on the newly formed island that can be seen today. Don't worry they were not stranded for too long, a helicopter eventually turned up to rescue them.

We travelled along the coast further taking in views of The Blowhole, The Arch and Thunder Cave before arriving at The Grotto below. You could climb down steps into The Grotto where the sea comes right up to the wall upon which we are sitting, but when we where there the tide wasn't fully in.

Further down the coast was the Bay of Islands and Jayne perched on a fence in the warm sea breeze.

And then David appeared to complete the picture.
