Darwin 12/4 to 16/4
We arrived at Darwin and were both very pleasantly surprised at what we found. It was a much larger and more open town than we had both imagined after some of the places we have visited to reach here.
Much of the outskirts of Darwin were used by the army in WWII and there are lots of original airstrips still in view along the Stuart Highway.
Darwin also had a major cyclone named Tracy in December 1974 on Christmas Day, which destroyed a lot of the town. This is the remains of the town hall today.

The church also only had the front entrance remaining so it has been incorporated into a newer more modern addition.

Darwin and it's surrounding areas seem very modern as a result, and this is the Northern Territory Parliament House. However, it has been recreated sympathetically trying to incorporate the old colonial style.

This is Cullen Bay Marina which had a shopping and restaurant type area surrounding it.

Whilst in the marina Jayne spotted a large butterfly and took it's photo.
We then ventured to Fannie Bay where the army soldiers were based during WWII to protect Darwin and Australia. There were still some relics around including machine gun ramparts and artiliary stores. The trees around the area are partly covered by the sea.

Here is a Straw Necked Ibis as seen on the caravan site.
